U.S. is Falling Behind in High-speed Internet Access

Why that matters

The United States is falling behind other industrialized nations in high-speed internet access.  What can you do to help?  Test your connection speed now to help Speed Matters report on the average American speed.
Why does speed matter? High-speed Internet means more than being able to watch web videos or download large files. High-speed Internet means more jobs, better health care and improved services for seniors and rural communities. But America is falling behind in the race for high-speed Internet access for all.

It’s time for that to change—and you can play a part. The Communications Workers of America union has launched a campaign to advocate for high-speed networks. Testing your own speed, even if you are currently using a dial-up connection, will help make the new Speed Matters project a success.

How fast are you? Find out now at: www.speedmatters.org/jwj
Speed matters because:

  • Recent studies show that building a national high-speed network could add 1.2 million jobs and $500 billion to the economy.
  • Police and firefighters can use high-speed Internet to respond more quickly in emergency situations and make us more secure
  • High-speed Internet can improve the delivery of health care. In Georgia, a network connects stroke specialists with 10 rural hospitals—allowing them to make life-saving diagnoses from a distance.
