Office Manager, Health & Welfare Administrator & Comptroller

I began my career with Local 547 in 1978 when Business Manager Bob Ross hired me to manage the Union’s finances and conversion to a new membership recordkeeping system.  At that time, the office operation was entirely manual, except for two electric typewriters dating from the 1950’s. 

In 1981, I was appointed to my current position of Office Manager and Comptroller of the Union.  Since that time, we have changed membership recordkeeping systems two more times to our current, customized “Labor Information Management System” (LIMS), as part of our “state of the art” office administration including high speed internet, electronic imaging and storage. 

In 1984, in addition to my Office Manager/Comptroller duties, I was appointed as the Administrator of the newly created Health and Welfare Trust Fund, the launching pad for our current multi-employer health care plan covering 1,000 Local 547 members with a broad array of benefits, including Traditional, PPO, and HMO plans, Dental, Vision, Short and Long Term Disability, Prescription Drugs, Life Insurance, and Employee Assistance Plan.  More recently, we’ve added our Retiree Health Plan, allowing our members to pre-fund retiree health care expenses. 

In 1989, I managed the design and implementation of the new Local 547 Retirement Plan and 401(k) Plan, in response to requests from our members for an additional retirement savings plan.  These Plans have grown tremendously, giving us the ability to now offer 24/7 internet access and toll free telephone service to our Plan participants, as well as professional investment advice with a wide array of mutual fund investment choices. 

Our Local continues to be proactive in the employee benefits field.  We are founding members of the Public Employee Trust and the AFL-CIO/Employer Purchasing Coalition.
